The Adjourn Quilt
The Adjourn Quilt Pattern is here!
This might just be my favorite pattern written to date and is easily the most unique and versatile pattern I’ve designed. Many of you may know that I wrote a mini version of this quilt pattern as a part of the Modern Makes Membership, but I actually designed the full version first!
The Adjourn Quilt is a block-based quilt pattern that utilizes the strip piecing technique to make all those tiny little strips a breeze to put together. The working title for this pattern was the “Bath Tile Quilt” because of the use of negative space separating the pieces, giving the imagery of grout between tiles. But what I love about that negative space is that it gives the separated half square triangles room to breathe, creating a modern, cohesive look, and making this the perfect quilt pattern for all those patterned fat quarter bundles you’ve been hoarding! (...or maybe that’s just me!)
Original and Scrappy Variations
In the cover colorway, I chose a soft, subtle monochrome that is just so cozy and lovely. For this version, I used Kona Cotton solids in Doeskin, Suede, and Lingerie. If you’d like to make this colorway yourself, get the quilt kit from my shop!
For quilters outside of the United States, get the original kit from Piece Fabric Co.!
If you prefer Art Gallery Fabrics Pure Solids, I recommend Mystic Grey, Potter’s Clay, and Sweet Macadamia.
My favorite size for this quilt is the Twin, which has a total of 20 blocks, so that’s what I chose to make for the cover quilt. Typically I love to do my own quilting, but because I made a larger quilt than usual (throw is almost always my go-to!), I decided to send it out to be quilted by the amazing Emily of the Brown Eyed Quilter, and I am so thankful to have put it into the hands of someone so talented! She used the “Delicado” pantograph, which has a lovely botanical design that I feel beautifully softens the geometric lines of the pattern.
As I mentioned before, this pattern is so perfect for fat quarter bundles and also has a scrappy option! In my throw size, I used one of my favorite bundles of wovens that had a very moody, neutral vibe. I’ve been holding on to this bundle for forever, trying to find the perfect pattern for it and all it took was designing my own!
This pattern comes in several different sizes, including Wall/Pillow (22” x 22”), Baby (41” x 41”), Throw (57” x 72”), Twin (73” x 88”), and Queen/King (91” x 106”). As you can see in my Pillow and Baby samples below, these sizes are different from the larger ones in that they are square! The Pillow or Wall Hanging is a single block, and the Baby size is 2 blocks x 2 blocks.

Recommended Tools & Techniques
This pattern can really be done with whatever tools you have on hand, there’s nothing special required! However, this is a very intricate pattern with lots of little pieces, and there are a couple tools that might make your life easier!
The first is the Stripology XL Ruler by Creative Grids. This one will make cutting all those little strips a breeze!
The second is the 6-1/2 inch Square Ruler by Creative Grids. You can definitely use any ruler larger than 6-1/2 inches to square up pieces on this quilt, but pairing this ruler with the rotating cutting mat below will make it that much easier.
And last is the 14 x 14 inch Rotating Cutting Mat by Fiskars. As mentioned above, pairing this with a 6-1/2 inch square ruler will make trimming your squares go (nearly) lighting fast!
PRO TIP: If you use multiple ruler sizes for the pattern, I highly recommend using all rulers of the same brand. Every brand measures a tiny bit different and I’ve found that, for this pattern in particular with all it’s tiny pieces, incremental differences in dimension can throw things off quite a bit.
Adjourn Testing Team
I was absolutely blown away by all the variations created by this amazing pattern tester team! I was so inspired by their creativity to take this pattern and truly make it their own, using the half square triangles almost as a blank canvas to create their own designs within.
